Savel Kwartin (Baritone) ( Khonorad, Ukraine 1874 - New York 1953)

Savel (Zevulun) Kwartin was born in Khonorad, Ukraine in 1874. It is difficult to classify his voice, since it was part tenor and part baritone. Although offered many opportunities to sing in opera, he chose to remain exclusively a cantor. He held important posts in Vienna, St. Petersburg, and Budapest before emigrating to the United States in 1920. For 10 years he was cantor at the Temple Emanuel in Brooklyn. After retirement, he moved to Palestine, where he resided for 7 years, but then returned to New York, where he died in 1953. His daughter, Nina, had a respectable career as a soprano, and was the mother of the soprano, Evelyn Lear.
